Fluteless machine taps
VÖLKEL fluteless taps for chipless thread production
Fluteless taps (forming taps) are special threading tools for the chipless production of internal threads and offer maximum dimensional accuracy, long tool life and optimal results in cold-formable materials.
Advantages of fluteless taps:
- Longer service life compared to cutting taps
- Consistent dimensional and profile accuracy
- Higher allowable machining speed
- Stronger threads due to compressed material
- No chip formation = no chip removal

Recommended application for VÖLKEL HSSE fluteless machine taps
Unlike conventional cutting taps, fluteless taps do not cut the thread, but rather form it. Thread forming compresses the material being machined. This creates threads with high strength and precise geometry without producing chips or the need to remove them – a clear advantage in the machine and mass processing of thin-walled materials. Select the appropriate type (bright, steam tempered or TiN-coated) for the material to be machined from the table below.
| Material | Bright | Steam tempered | TiN coating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unalloyed steels; low-alloyed steels | ⚫ | ||
| Heat-resistant steels; tensile strength approx. 900 N/mm² | ⚫ | ||
| Stainless steels; tensile strength approx. 700 N/mm² | ⚫ | ⚪ | |
| Constructional steels | ⚫ | ⚫ | |
| Long-chipping brass | ⚫ | ||
| Long-chipping bronzes | ⚫ | ||
| Copper and copper alloys | ⚫ | ||
| Long-chipping aluminium and aluminium alloys | ⚫ | ||
| Zinc alloys | ⚫ |
⚫ = suitable ⚪ = conditionally suitable
⚠️ For thread depths greater than 1.5xD, fluteless taps with oil grooves should always be used. Graphite-containing, high-lubricity cooling lubricants or oils are particularly suitable for the use with VÖLKEL fluteless taps.
Recommended core hole diameters
⚠️ Thread forming uses different core hole diameters than thread cutting. The table shows the recommended core hole diameters (drill sizes) for the most common metric standard threads, which should be pre-drilled for thread forming.
| Thread size | Pitch | Core hole diameter |
|---|---|---|
| M 1 | 0.25 | 0.90 mm |
| M 1.1 | 0.25 | 1.00 mm |
| M 1.2 | 0.25 | 1.10 mm |
| M 1.4 | 0.30 | 1.25 mm |
| M 1.6 | 0.35 | 1.45 mm |
| M 1.7 | 0.35 | 1.55 mm |
| M 1.8 | 0.35 | 1.65 mm |
| M 2 | 0.40 | 1.80 mm |
| M 2.5 | 0.45 | 2.30 mm |
| M 3 | 0.50 | 2.80 mm |
| M 4 | 0.70 | 3.70 mm |
| M 5 | 0.80 | 4.65 mm |
| M 6 | 1.00 | 5.55 mm |
